Dermatitis (Eczema / Psoriasis)

Dermatitis refers to a set of skin disorders, most notably eczema and psoriasis, that share the characteristic of generating inflammation and irritation. Eczema, a skin condition marked by red, itchy rashes, is frequently caused by allergies, irritants, or genetic factors. This chronic skin illness affects people of all ages, and while there is no cure, numerous therapies aim to manage symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Psoriasis, on the other hand, is an immune-mediated illness characterized by rapid skin cell overproduction, which results in elevated, red patches coated in silvery scales. The specific etiology of psoriasis is unknown, however genetic predisposition and immune system malfunction play important roles. Eczema and psoriasis can both be physically and emotionally distressing, causing discomfort and self-consciousness.
Topical steroids, moisturizers, and, in severe situations, systemic medicines or biologic therapies are also possible treatment options.

Causes and risk factors

The causes and risk factors for dermatitis, including conditions like eczema and psoriasis, can vary, but they often involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and immunological factors.
Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis):
Dry Skin: People with dry skin are more susceptible to developing eczema. Insufficient moisturization can compromise the skin barrier, making it more prone to irritation.
Immune System Dysfunction: Immune system dysfunction can lead to the development of eczema. Allergic reactions to certain chemicals can cause an inflammatory response in the skin.

Psoriasis:
Genetics: Psoriasis has a strong hereditary component, and people who have a family history of the disorder are more likely to develop it. Specific genetic variables are linked to immune system dysregulation and aberrant skin cell development.
Hormonal Changes: Hormonal changes, particularly during puberty or in women during pregnancy, may influence the onset or severity of psoriasis.
